For most women, their new diet begins after they have found out they are pregnant. They begin focusing on what they are eating or drinking. They may cut out caffeine or have to quit smoking abruptly.
However, for some women, they may begin to plan for a pregnancy before it actually occurs. If you have made the decision to get pregnant, the first thing you should do is schedule an appointment with your doctor. He will be able to discuss any changes that you need to make before conceiving. You may need to gain or lose a few pounds. Your doctor will be able to put you on a diet and exercise plan.
This diet will consist of healthy foods that have high nutrient densities. You want to incorporate foods that are high in vitamins, minerals, proteins, fiber, and folic acid. You should strive to eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. You can also add protein in the form of peanut butter, nuts, hard boiled eggs, and cheeses.
Consuming 6-8 glasses of water is important for any healthy person. Pregnant women and nursing mothers will have an increased thirst because of their hormones. Start to cut out coffee or highly caffeinated beverages. They will not be healthy for your child once you become pregnant. Rather, choose to drink fruit and vegetable juices.
There are also certain foods that you should try to avoid. Foods that are high in fat and sugar offer little nutritional value. They can also cause sugar crashes, making you more fatigued. Eating raw eggs or raw, undercooked meats or fish can often be dangerous. Be sure to check the mercury content of certain seafood such as king mackerel, swordfish, or shark. Cheeses such as camembert and brie contain unpasteurized milk which is dangerous for a fetus.
Consuming alcohol early in a pregnancy can cause birth defects. If you are planning on becoming pregnant, avoid alcoholic beverages. Research has also found that drinking alcohol can lower your chances of getting pregnant. Like alcohol, cigarettes can also cause serious birth defects and even miscarriage. Gradually quitting smoking before pregnancy will be easier than quitting abruptly.
Your doctor may also recommend you begin prenatal vitamins or a multivitamin that contains at least 400 mg of folic acid. These vitamins will be full of the nutrients and vitamins that are essential to your baby’s growth. They will contain vitamins B,C, and D, along with folic acid, iron, and calcium.
Getting pregnant is a very important decision for a woman. If she has the opportunity, preparing her body, checking her health, and changing her diet and habits can often greatly increase her chance of a healthier pregnancy.
